Shawfair offers residents the benefits of country living, while offering quick and easy rail and road access to the city centre. The new Shawfair station, on the new Borders Railway, which opened in September 2015, provides direct access to the heart of the capital within 15 minutes. For those looking to go beyond the city, the Edinburgh city bypass is a short drive away and the train line also goes to the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders in under an hour.

For commuters, a shuttle bus running from the Park and Ride at nearby Shawfair Park to Shawfair station will give easier and quicker access to the city centre from Midlothian and beyond. With journey times to the centre of Edinburgh in 15 mins, and to Stow in 30 mins or Tweedbank in 45 mins, residents and commuters have easy access right along the new Borders Railway.
