Shawfair is shaped by its surrounding landscape, with around 160 acres of community woodland and green space across the masterplan. There’s space for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors, with beaches and parks close by.

Around 4 miles from Shawfair, Portobello Beach has over 2 miles of sandy coastline, a Victorian promenade and a mix of independent cafés, making it a well-used spot for walking and swimming.

With a network of local routes and a 3km traffic-free path, Shawfair makes it easy to get around by bike, whether for everyday journeys or time outdoors.

New schools are planned at Shawfair to support the growing community. Midlothian Council is working in partnership with Shawfair LLP to deliver new learning facilities as more families move into the area.

Current provision and planned timescales:

• Dalkeith Secondary School – currently open to Shawfair pupils.
• Danderhall Primary School – currently open to Shawfair pupils.
• Shawfair Town Centre Primary School (part of the new Shawfair Community Campus) – planned to open in 2028.
• Shawfair Town Centre Secondary School (part of the new Shawfair Community Campus) – planned to open in 2028.
• Second Primary School within the Masterplan – planned post-2028 (subject to confirmation by Midlothian Council).
• Nursery and pre-school facilities are also planned within the town centre, close to transport links and the Community Campus.

With new homes, schools and green spaces planned across the masterplan, Shawfair is a place that grows with you over time.

Everyday essentials are close at hand, with a Co-op at Shawfair Park and a wider range of shops and services at nearby Fort Kinnaird. As the town centre develops, more local retail and amenities will be added within Shawfair itself.
