Construction begins on major new road to connect future Shawfair town centre with the Borders Railway

Today (28 July) Shawfair LLP announced the appointment of Crummock (Scotland) Limited as the contractor that will begin works on the first piece of major road infrastructure at Shawfair, the largest urban expansion project in Edinburgh and Midlothian, incorporating 4,000 new homes, offices, shops, schools and other community facilities.  The new road will connect the future town centre to the Shawfair station, the third stop on the new Borders Railway line.

James Palmer, Shawfair LLP, said: “The commencement of works on the new road is an important milestone for Shawfair as this will be the main road connecting local residents and businesses to the new Borders Railway at Shawfair station.  It will also allow for a quick commute from the Shawfair station into Edinburgh city and easy access to the borders. We are pleased to have Crummock on board and look forward to working with them to deliver high quality infrastructure for the residents of Shawfair.”

Works will primarily take place at Monktonhall Colliery Road, Dalkeith and are set to begin from July 27th, programmed for five weeks. The new road will complement recently completed works by Network Rail on Colliery Road, and upgrades by Shawfair LLP at Millerhill Road.

Crummock director, Alex Jeffrey, stated: “We understand the significance of the Shawfair community development on the local economy and are delighted to have won this first opportunity to work with Shawfair LLP.  We hope to be involved with the development for many years to come and our aim is to provide the highest quality of service that will benefit current and future residents and businesses for years to come.”

Letters have been sent to residents this week detailing where and when construction will be taking place over the coming weeks.
