Road, Landscape & Tree Planting Works

As part of the wider development of the new town of Shawfair, there are plans to build a new access road between the A6106 and The Wisp.  Alongside, we plan to extend the cycle route network, install new and upgrade existing utilities, create an open water drainage pond and to plant large areas of structural landscaping and community woodland.

These infrastructure and landscaping improvements will surround the upcoming housing development by Stewart Milne, plans for which are currently being determined by Midlothian Council.

The designs for these works have been extensively discussed and agreed with community groups and local residents, and approved through standard Midlothian Council planning determination.

We believe the development will add significantly to the amenity value of the area and we hope all neighbours will use and enjoy the extended path network and public open space once completed.

The plan shows the proposed works. Site start will now be Monday 3rd February and should be completed early winter 2020.  The wider landscaping improvements are anticipated to follow on in appropriate planting seasons thereafter.  During this work, additional safety and security measures will be in place including a 30mph limit along the A6106 between The Wisp junction and Newton Village once works commence near Millerhill Road.

Construction vehicles have been instructed to avoid built-up areas where possible, and all work will be undertaken during the permitted hours of 8am to 7pm week-days and 8am to 1pm Saturdays. The site compound and construction access will initially be off the Wisp, and will transfer to North of Woolmet Bing early April. Please note, construction traffic will continue to use the new formed junction on The Wisp as a secondary site access throughout the works.

Akela Construction Ltd, one of Scotland’s leading privately owned civil engineering and building contractors, has been appointed by Shawfair as the main contractor for these works.

Thank you in advance for your patience during these construction activities and we thank you for your continued support in creating Shawfair’s new community.

Once work begins, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Jim Gardner Akela Project Manager; mobile 07912 267140.
